The Farm Ops program's mission is to help get veterans access to the educational support they need to pursue their agricultural goals. The Farmer Veteran Fellowship Fund helps veterans purchase some of those critical items they need to get started. Awards range from $1,000 to $5,000 and some of the most common purchases include: All-Terrain Vehicles (ATV); beekeeping equipment; breeding livestock; bulk feed; fencing; scholarships; storage freezers; tractor implements; walk-behind tractors.
You can apply for whatever YOU think you need to be successful. And you have until Sunday, February 14, 2021 to JOIN FVC (free), work on cleaning up and updating your farm's business plan for the coming season (which we all should be doing this time of year anyway), and submit a very short application.
So please think about it, and if you want assistance preparing your application, Dean Koyanagi, Veteran Program Associate at Cornell Small Farms Program would be happy to discuss your plans and application. Also, if you know of other veterans starting a homestead or small farm, but are struggling to afford all the things one needs to get started, maybe you can encourage them to apply?
