Animal Health Requirements

There are a number of health requirements for bringing animals to the fair. They differ from species to species. Please read the information from NYS Ag and Markets here.

Please note that the following information for goats is not in the Ag and Markets policy but is required by New York State and Seneca County 4-H:

The use of the off label rabies vaccine, as administered by a licensed veterinarian, will be a requirement for all 4-H goats intended for public exhibit that meet the age requirement of three months. Proof of immunization must be provided with a certificate signed by administering veterinarian. The use of barrier fencing to restrict public access to goats will only be required when animals are too young to be vaccinated. Kids too young to be rabies vaccinated but born to rabies vaccinated mothers and housed to avoid rabies exposure are exempt from the requirement for barrier fencing unless specified by county health departments. When exhibiting goats that require barrier fencing, the Department of Animal Science at Cornell is available to provide guidance on a simple, effective, and cost effective pen structure that complies with this policy. For immunized goats older than three months, Association 4-H staff are required to provide posters that inform the public about the risks involved with animal exhibits and the importance of hand washing. The Department of Animal Science will provide links to materials that can be used for this purpose. In addition, New York State Health Department guidelines will be followed for reporting any animal exposure incidents.
