Have you ever wondered about preserving food at home, not exactly sure why you should do it, where to start, or how to make sure you use it once you do? Join CCE Seneca nutrition staff and Master Food Preservers as they kick-off their 2024 Food Preservation Series with a Back to Basics workshop.

This is the first food preservation workshop for the 2024 growing season with more to come each month. This year’s Food Preservation Series theme is “Pulling from Your Pantry (and your freezer)”.

Summertime in the Finger Lakes is ripe with fresh fruits and vegetables from backyard gardens, Farmers Markets, and roadside stands. Local farm raised dairy and meats, wild game, and wild caught fish are also plentiful. Preserving these seasonal, fresh foods to use throughout the year is economical, nutritious, and can support local farms. The Back to Basics class will lay the foundation for the series with the “why’s” and “how’s” of food preservation. Let’s start getting back to the basics by learning how to preserve seasonal food, with or without some of the standard equipment and gadgets.

Back to Basics workshop participants will learn the benefits and uses of home food preservation, as well as some simple freezing and dehydrating techniques using tested, reliable methods through hands-on demonstration and printed resources. We will discuss easily freezing fruits, vegetables, jams, and pie fillings, as well as using different methods, like an oven and microwave, for dehydrating fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Freezing and dehydrating are quick and easy ways to preserve foods when they are in peak season to make delicious and healthy snacks and meals later. Participants will receive taste samples, recipes, and an item to bring home. Register today and learn the basics of food preservation!
