Do you find yourself confused when it comes to recycling? It’s easy to become overwhelmed when determining what is accepted and what should be thrown away. If you’re looking to learn more about recycling, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Seneca County, Schuyler County Planning Department, and the Cayuga County Planning Department will be offering a free educational event, “How To Recycle Right: Navigating the Recycling Industry”.

Participants can attend in person at one(1) of three(3) locations or online via Zoom. Locations include:

Seneca County: CCE Conference Room, 369 East Main St, Waterloo

Cayuga County: CCE Office, 248 Grant Ave, Auburn

Schuyler County: Human Services Complex, Room 120, 323 Owego St, Montour Falls

Attendees will gain a better understanding of the current recycling industry by experts from Syracuse University Institute for Sustainability Engagement, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Division of Materials Management, and Sunnking Sustainable Solutions. 

Topics include:

  • curbside single-stream
  • “return to store” recycling options
  • flow of recycling materials in NYS
  • regulated recycling facilities
  • NYS Solid Waste Management Plan
  • challenges of hard-to-recycle materials like electronics and batteries

Presenters sharing important information about recycling include:

Lindsay Eberhart - Program Associate, Syracuse University Institute for Sustainability Engagement

Victoria Lannon - Environmental Program Specialist, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Region 8, Division of Materials Management

Paola Viera - Community Programs Manager, Sunnking Sustainable Solutions.
