Join us to learn the basics about raising birds such as chickens and pheasants.

People raise birds for different reasons. It can be rewarding and very challenging at the same time. This educational program will explore how raising laying hens (chickens) for eggs, or raising pheasants for cultural reasons relates to the concept of sustainability.

Amy Barkley will virtually present starting at 6:30pm “Raising Hens for Eggs: Is It All It’s Cracked Up To Be?” She will review local regulations for chicken ownership, expectations for your flock, raising layers from peep to egg, costs of owning your own flock, best practices and regulations for selling eggs.

Staff from the Reynolds Game Farm will discuss the history and explain how people can participate in the Day-old Pheasant Chick Program starting at 7:30pm. The Cooperative Day-old Pheasant Chick Program is one of the New York State DEC’s programs that help make more game available for hunting and bird watching in the area. Participating in raising and releasing pheasants is a great way to get youth involved outdoors while supporting cultural traditions associated with pheasant hunting.
