4-H Horse Extravaganza - Horse Bowl & Hippology

The primary objective of 4-H Horse Extravaganza is to provide an opportunity for youth to demonstrate the breadth of their equine knowledge in a competitive setting where attitudes of friendliness and fairness prevail. It is hoped that this project contest will generate a rewarding experience for all contestants.

Horse Bowl
  • Each county may send up to two (2) full teams of four (4) members. Teams with less than four (4) members will be combined to create as many teams of four (4) as possible at the discretion of the event chair(s). County staff will be notified of combined teams after entries have been received.
  • Division contests will either be Round Robin or Double Elimination format depending on the number or registrations.
  • Ribbons for 1st-20th place individual and 1st-10th place team will be given.
  • A name plate for each contestant on a team is required. They will not be provided the day of the event.
  • Jr., Sr., & Novice Horse Bowl Questions will be supplied by the state this year and are confidential.
  • The top ten (10) individuals from both the Junior and Senior Divisions of the regional contest, who accept the invitation to the state contest, will represent the region at the state contests. Two teams of five (5) members will be assembled based on factors including, but not limited to, geographic location and circumstances.
    • State contest teams will consist of 4 members and 1 alternate. The alternate member will have at least 2 opportunities to enter play at the state contest.
    • The coaches of the first and second place county teams in the Junior and Senior divisions will be offered first refusal to coach a regional team of their choice for the event.
    • In the event that a member declines invitation to the state event, the member in the next placing (and subsequent placings) will replace that member. This will continue until both Junior and Senior state contest teams are filled.
Hippology
  • There are not limits on the number of participants a county can send to the regional event.
  • Hippology phases will be as follows: horse judging, written examination, stations, tack identification, slides and Team problem for Junior and Senior levels. All responses for the team problem will be oral (notes may be taken in but used sparingly)-please refer to the NYS Horse Educational Events Rule Book. The team problem score will not be included in determining the rank of the individuals in the contest but will be added to the team score to determine the overall team standing.
    • Prepared Team Problem (100 points)-For Senior Teams, and practice only for Junior Teams.
    • Each team will be given preparation time to be followed immediately by time with a judge to respond to the problem.
    • Extemporaneous Team Problem-for practice only for Senior Team-An extemporaneous will be presented to the team and the members of each team will have a set amount of time in which to present their solution to the judge.
  • There will be no Team problem for the Novice division.
  • Ribbons for 1st-20th place individual and 1st-10th place team will be given.
  • The top sixteen individuals from both the Junior and Senior Divisions of the regional contest, who accept the invitation to the state contest, will represent the region at the state contest. Four teams of four (4) members will be assembled based on factors including, but not limited to, geographical location and circumstances.
    • State contest teams will consist of 3 members and 1 alternate member. In the event that a member declines invitation to the state contest, the member in the next placing (and subsequent placings) will replace the member. This will continue until both Junior and Senior state contest teams are filled.
    • Coaches from the top 4 teams in the Junior and Senior divisions will be offered first refusal to coach a regional team of their choice for State competition.

8:45am–Registration of contestants

9:00am–Horse Bowl Volunteer Orientation

9:30am–Welcome to the event

9:45am–Start of AM session - *Hippology & Horse Bowl Divisions TBA

1:00pm–Start of PM session - *Hippology & Horse Bowl Divisions TBA

*Final AM & PM Session schedule will be provided shortly after close of registration
