March 13, 2023: Soil Health in High Tunnels, Jud Reid

High tunnels are soil based greenhouses popular with cut flower growers for several reasons. High tunnels improve flower quality, post harvest, stem length and may offer pest and disease management in addition to season extension. However, growing in soil indoors presents challenges for soil nutrient and pH management. In this session we will discuss how to manage soil and irrigation water parameters to ensure long term viability for high tunnel cut flowers. Jud Reid is a specialist with the Cornell Vegetable Program Team who focuses on greenhouse/high tunnel production and small farm operations.

March 20, 2023: Integrated Weed Management, Bryan Brown

Bryan will cover keys to identifying common weeds in cut flower production, differences between species in their biology such as their life cycle and timing of emergence, particular traits of weed species that can be targeted by management efforts. Also he will discuss weed management basics such as hoeing, mulching, and herbicides, and how they fit within the IPM pyramid, which focuses on prevention of weed seed production and depletion of perennial storage reserves.

Bryan’s research and extension programs aim to improve management of weeds while minimizing the associated environmental, economic, and human health risks.
