Demonstration Garden Open House

  • Tuesday, August 29, 2017, 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM

Seneca County Cornell Cooperative Extension (SCCCE) Master Gardeners’ are hosting an open house at their demonstration garden.

This year the demonstration garden was planted according to plans designed by a horticulture class at Cornell University and were planted in the nine 3x3 foot raised beds. The vegetable plantings incorporate features of an ecological garden such as cover crops, companion planting, mulching, and attracting beneficials. We will be sampling any of the ripe vegetables to see if you might want to grow some in your garden next year.

The garden was started three years ago in what was an empty field. The area now has a composting area where you can learn the do’s and don’ts of composting. Twelve raised beds full of various plantings including vegetables, herbs, and strawberries. There is also a butterfly garden, a three sisters planting and blueberry plants in tubs for visitors to see.

Master Gardeners will show the public what they can do in a small space. The gardens are a collaboration with Cornell University Department of Horticulture and part of their statewide Cornell Garden-Based Learning Vegetable Variety Trial (VVT). The project aims to gather data to help Cornell create their recommended list of vegetable and herb varieties for New York State gardeners. Each county that participates then rates the vegetable and herb varieties via the Vegetable Varieties for Gardeners citizen science online forum at www.vegvariety.cce.cornell.edu.

Learn about various growing methods and varieties and see what might work for you. There will be handouts available and Master Gardeners to answer your gardening questions during the one-hour garden tour and information session (and don't forget about the free samples!)

In case of rain, bring an umbrella and tour the gardens anyway. Please park in the back parking lot of the ambulance so as not to block any emergency vehicles.
